The Metric System
The metric system has been one of the hardest things for 8th grade students to master. I expect this will be another year of the same struggles. I will do my best to help you understand how the metric system works. We will complete many different problems to help explain your issues and you will be expected to practice this at home. Metrics is the method you will be using for mathematical problems for the rest of your education career. You must be able to convert from the U.S. standard unit to metrics. No longer will be talking about cups and gallons, now you will recognize liters as the way of measuring liquids. In addition, we will be using grams and meters to measure weight and distance. Sound difficult? Don't worry, you will have everything you need to master this topic. Here is my favorite way of remembering the metric system.
What does this mean? Each letter stands for a different part of the metric system. K = Kilo, H = Hecto, D = Deka, B = Base (Liter, Meter, Gram), D - Deci, C - Centi, M - Milli.
Here are some practice sheets you can use to help you understand how the metric system can be converted.
- K - King
- H - Henry
- D - Died
- B - By
- D - Drinking
- C - Chocolate
- M - Milk
